It's Akron Marathon Time Again - Another "Opputunity"

9/3/06 by Denis Osowski

Dear Members,

-

Yet another opportunity awaits those of you who may have had it up to their ears in 'opportunities' already this year.

-

Every year for the past 3 years or so the Summit Freewheelers have provided a good portion of the bike escorts that the Akron Marathon uses to ride ahead of the lead runners of various categories over the last 5 miles of the marathon. The purpose is to let the hundreds of volunteers, police, and spectators know that there is a lead runner coming through.

-

This has been a blast for those who have participated. It's like riding your bike through a continuous circus of activity with some very interesting sites along the way. In short, it is way cool.

-

We are again looking to see who is interested in performing this fun bit of community service for the Akron Marathon on September 30.

-

For those who accept this mission, they will need to meet at about 8am at approximately West Market and Sand Run Parkway the morning of the marathon, affix a giant laminated sign to the front of their bike displaying what category they are escorting, and then escort their lead runner riding just ahead of them following the 'blue line' all the way to Canal Park Stadium. One can expect to arrive at Canal Park no later than about 11am. Once there, all the SFW's join up and ride back to their cars.

-

You will receive race credentials and an Akron Marathon Volunteer T-Shirt as your souvenirs. This really is a good time and is nothing at all like the LeBron Ride experience some of you had earlier this summer. These marathon people have their act together.

-

Please let me know if you are interested in performing this fun bit of community service by Friday, September 8 so we can get a list to the organizing committee.

-

Thanks and have a great weekend!

-

Denis Osowski President - Summit Freewheelers
