On Saturday, May 22, Eli thought his birthday came early! Eli is the Hattie Larlham resident who was presented with a shiny blue trike, courtesy of the Summit Freewheelers. Eli is disabled and has problems going on neighborhood outings with fellow residents. Our club was asked if we could help find a trike for Eli. Denis Osowski made the request a reality. With the full support of the Club, he contacted Tom Denholm at our sponsor Marty's Bicycles, and Tom enthusiastically gave us a great deal on a brand new trike. Denis then worked with Hattie Larlham to fulfill their needs, used his mechanical skills to assemble the trike, and organized the presentation event. If there was ever any doubt about how appreciative Eli or the people from Hattie Larlham would be about receiving this trike, just ask any of the Freewheelers who were there Saturday—we were all blown away by Eli's reaction! Two Freewheelers won championships at the Ohio State Road Race: George Liolios and Jimmy McDonald. George won the Masters 55 and Jimmy won the Juniors race. Congratulations to both. Training Camp No. 2: You may be too old for summer camp but you can still attend drill-master George's day camp for cycling! Get in a light workout and learn new skills prior to the Twin Sizzler race on July 4th by attending this session. Session will be held on Saturday, July 3, from 8–11 at Hampton Hills Park. SFW Annual Banquet: Our annual banquet will be held at 6:00 pm Friday, January 14, 2005. We will once again meet at Papa Joe's, although in a bigger room than last year. The restaurant is located at the intersection of Akron Peninsula Road and Portage Trail. All members and families are welcome. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided and you can order from the menu. TOP awards will be presented, and, as usual, you can expect to be amused by various forms of entertainment! 2005 Indoor Training Series: Just in time to help you recover from holiday binging! The dates for this year's indoor training are the three Saturdays Jan 15, Jan 29, and Feb 12. We'll start setting up at 9:00 am and go to about 11:30, or as long as you can stand it. The location is the same as last year, thanks to Steve and the generosity of the Cuyahoga Falls FOP Lodge. The lodge is located on the SE corner of Springdale Road and Hudson Drive. Don't forget to bring a fan and extension cord! |
Latest on TOP: TOP looks like it is off to a great start based on the riders who turned out Thursday night. FYI for those who weren't there, we moved the race from the Hale Farm loop to Oak Hill because of graduation at Old Trail School and heavy traffic on that road. We had a huge turn-out—it looked more like the C-2/3 race at RATL than a TOP race (what happened to our laid-back, low key, grass-roots racing?). We set up an A and B race but probably 10–12 B riders simply opted to go for a ride rather than do Oak Hill. SFW and the SHSR: Just in case there was ever any doubt about the mettle of the racers in our club, ten of the hardest core of our hardcore racers are making big plans to do the Savage Hill Stage Race on Labor Day weekend. This three-day, four race, quad popping, lung busting stage race features two of the toughest climbs you can find in Ohio—Savage Hill and Chicken Coop Hill (both near Lancaster Ohio). The club is sending two five-man teams, one for the Masters race and and one for the Cat 3/4 team. The Masters team is George Liolios, Jim (Cappy) Mullins, Denis Osowski, Shawn Adams, and Glenn Sullinger. The Cat 3/4 Team is Angelo Catalano, Josh Blubaugh, Rob Tandy, Jimmy MacDonald, and Bob Grimm. Fall Challenge: Thanks to Shawn Adams and the many Freewheeler volunteers who put forth a lot of work to bring us another great Fall Challenge Road Race to finish off the local racing season. A nice turnout and a great day helped make it a fun and successful race! See the race results. First 2005 Planning Meeting: The 2005 season
got off to a good start with the first planning meeting on Saturday, September 25.
more Second 2005 Planning Meeting: On
Saturday, October 30, there was a planning meeting at Bruegger's Bagel Bakery
on Merriman Road. Discussions included the state time trial (George), TOP program,
uniforms, sponsors, winter training, RATL, 2005 officers, and even a new name for
the club. Read more |
The Summit Freewheelers is a developmental racing club. This means we focus on helping members develop basic cycling and racing skills as well as provide training opportunities for expert level racers. Some members simply work on developing their fitness and handling skills, while others follow rigorous training schedules. See more about our training rides and programs on the Training Page.
