Wobble-Naught Bike Fit System Review

2/11/03 by George Liolios

I have naturally been interested with bike fit so when I heard about the Wobble-Naught fitting system I was intrigued enough to thoroughly check their web site. The more I read the more interesting the system seemed. Wobble-Naught offered a on line DIY for $24.95 or you could contact one of their Fit Experts such as Jim Baldesare to take care of you for $100.00.

With detailed instructions and color illustrations the $24.95 investment seemed to be a slam-dunk. However, a reliable fit is based on your accuracy of measurements. For instance, the most critical measurement for the Wobble-Naught system is determining the top of the trochanter, better known as the large projection of the femur at the top of the upper leg. So on second thought I decided it was in my best interest to have an expert such as Jim conduct the fit for me.

I scheduled an appointment with Jim and 4 ½ hours later I was on my way home. The length of time spent with me was a reflection of Jim's patience and detailed answers to my numerous questions. Apparently his other clients were less interested in the technical aspects of the system. It was "Size me and fit me so I can ride fast"!

After the measurements were made Jim transferred the recommended calculations to my bike and the cleat placement on my shoes. Ironically we lowered the saddle to the previous setting prior to my tinkering with my position last season, moved the saddle a bit forward and lengthened the stem. In addition to Jim's many accomplishments he is also a master mechanic so making adjustments were effortless. Jim attached an adjustable Salsa stem to my bike to replicate the new stem length, which is a great-added touch. We added my bars to the Salsa and my bike to the trainer so I could try out the fit.

As soon as I jumped on my bike I immediately felt SOLID, with firm contact of my sit bones to the saddle and my feet to the pedals. Additionally, as I pedaled I could feel my hamstrings as I pulled back on the pedal stroke without consciously thinking about the technique.

The reach to the brake hoods were now a wee bit to far, so in a flash Jim removed my bars and placed an other bar and brake hoods on the stem so I could verify the position. Before we finished, and at my request Jim changed the stack height of the stem, added my bars, stem and adjusted the headset. WOW!

After spending several hours with Jim it became very apparent that he truly loves the sport. His attention to detail, patience and knowledge provides you with unparallel service. Even though I couldn't convince Jim to come over to house and wash the windows I left as a very satisfied customer.

The only negative is I can't get out on the bike because of /?! ?# WEATHER!
