Summit Freewheeler Meeting August 26, 2002.
Twelve Freewheelers attended the August meeting at Arabica Coffee: Jim Mullins, Jim Gilmore, Denis Osowski, Angelo Catalano, Dan Gableman, Tom Collier, Doug Hale, Ted Ingraham, Mickey Rzymek, Bob Iden, and Becky Blice.
Becky, Denis, and Dan went over some of the planning and details for the Fall Challenge Race on September 21. It will be on the Riverview/Hale Farm loop. Registration will be at Hale Farm. The finish location was discussed and a final decision on where to finish will be made at a later date. A lot of marshals will be needed. Anyone willing to help, please contact Becky.
Officers/directors for the 2003 season were discussed and approved, with the exception of a President-Elect position. Ted stated that we need to put someone in this position so we can have a smooth transition next year to a new President. Ted recommended that either Denis or Angelo consider the job for next year. Following are the positions approved for next year: President - Ted Ingraham; President-Elect - ? ; Membership - Angelo Catalano; Sponsorship - Denis Osowski/Mickey Rzymek; Communications - Becky Blice/Bob Iden (webmaster); TOP - Tom Collier; Training - Jim Mullins/Becky Blice; Treasurer - Joanne Liolios.
We discussed our plans for the 2003 year using a schedule Mickey developed from the last meeting. RATL will be run next year by Dick Lott and Rick Schwarz. Dick will handle the race-day while Rick helps with the pre-race planning. Another State Criterium race was discussed. The biggest problem to doing another race in 2003 is finding a suitable course. A number of ideas to locate a course were discussed and various people said they would investigate further. A decision on doing the crit will be made at a later date.
Some contacts have already been made to obtain new sponsors for 2003. The goal is to obtain $3,000 in sponsors by the end of October. Denis, Angelo, and Mickey are all actively working on some of the sponsor contacts. A draft of next year's uniform is being prepared and we will use it to approach sponsors. Once sponsors are obtained, we plan to do the uniform order in early January.
Becky recommended we obtain a supply of club T-shirts. The idea would be to have an attractive shirt that could be given to volunteers and sponsors and would be available at cost to members. The idea was well received and Becky is going to investigate it further.
A discussion of the race team (Team Summit) covered some of the success and improvement we had in 2002 and ideas for 2003. The team has its eye on a few possible candidates that they hope to bring onto the team by next year. There are also more club members who have the potential to move up to the team soon. Ted suggested the team develop specific requirements for new team members and require a commitment for a minimum number of races. This would avoid future problems should the team begin to grow too large. It was agreed that 6-8 team members is ideal. There was agreement that the programs supporting the team this year were very good and it would good if we can repeat them next year although it will depend on the finances of the club. Jim Gilmore is going to work on developing a page to attach to the website to highlight Team Summit. Angelo is going to develop a resume format that both team members and other Freewheeler racers can use to record their race results.
There is just one more TOP event left for this year and then our last big event of the year will be the Fall Challenge Road Race. The immediate need in terms of planning for 2003 is to settle on next year's sponsors and then to design the uniforms and get them ordered.
